Meet Satijn Panyigay
Satijn Panyigay makes photographic work that invites the viewer to slow down. Fascinated by the psyche of the human being, she mostly photographs vacant spaces that are briefly not fulfilling their function. For example, the empty exhibition rooms of museums and their depots, or interiors of newly constructed homes and buildings undergoing renovation. Panyigay takes her analogue photographs during solitary, meditative explorations of the temporarily abandoned places. The images emerging display a balance between light and dark, serenity and gloom, resilience and vulnerability. Her strict but poetic work, in absence of any direct human narratives, is surprisingly humane – addressing the feelings of its observer.
Satijn Panyigay (1988) is a Dutch-Hungarian photographer currently living in Utrecht. In 2010, she graduated with a BA in Design Photography from the HKU in Utrecht. Panyigay's work has been featured in events such as Art Rotterdam, UNSEEN, PAN Amsterdam and PHOTO OFF. Her work has also been exhibited in renowned museums including The Hague Museum of Photography, Depot Boijmans van Beuningen, Villa Mondriaan among numerous others. Her works have been acquired by Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, DZ Bank, KPMG, and Lakeside Collection among many others.

In Higher Ground II-07, transformation takes the center stage as Satijn Panyigay witnesses the construction of new apartment buildings and the restoration of a historic municipal monument, which once housed a Dutch bank and is now being repurposed for multifunctional use.
The work shows the hallway of one of the apartments, waiting for its new inhabitants. The series captures spaces in their transitional and vacant state, distinctive of Panyigay's artistic approach. 'I love the size of this special edition in collaboration with Unfair; the door becomes a tiny portal to another world that you can place anywhere in your home.'
